MOSCOW, Apr 25 (PRIME) -- Russian Post has mothballed all public Internet access points, opened in its branches nationwide, because of a lack of funding, business daily Vedomosti reported on Tuesday on its Web site, citing the national postal operator’s Deputy Director Inessa Galaktionova.
“Due to an absence of financing, the contract with (state-controlled telecom operator) Rostelecom was not prolonged. At the moment, all 15,000 public Internet access points are frozen,” Galaktionova said.
The points were financed from the universal service fund, to which all operators contribute 1.2% of revenue every year. Its money, however, were used for other purposes, among others.
Galaktionova hopes the situation will be solved, and public Internet access points will work in the areas with no satellite or wireline Internet.
